Well,Friends Of Aristocracy!

We speak again of our newsroom, where in a little while, we will have, in all its emotions, the interview 153 of the Aristocracy. This time, we talked to a band that combines raw and clean vocals in styles that range from progressive to eclectic brutality. Our interviewees are the Finns from Somehow Jo. They introduce us to their third album entitled Scales And Details. Let's go to a song from them before we start our interview. And of course, thanks to Inverse Records and the band for answering our questions. The moment of truth has arrived!

A1:Talking about the composition work in Scales And Details?

Somehow Jo:Most of the stuff on the record is the outcome of jamming hours and hours in the rehearsal place. We wanted the album to have that jamming vibe and then we added the melodies and other stuff to that.

A2:What are the soundscapes that the band puts on this album?

Somehow Jo:Epic!

A3:What is the band's new approach to progressive metal?

Somehow Jo:We like to write some hard riffs and it pushes us to getting better all the time. Even though the hard stuff is a lot of fun, we try to keep it melodic and catchy to make those heads nodding.

A4:Some literature or film inspire the band?

Somehow Jo:I think it always effects on some level when you see a mind blowing movie or a book. It gets the ideas going. But nothing particular comes to mind.

A5:The fifth song is a tribute to the historic Canadian band?

Somehow Jo:The song is about finding the beauty in the moment a little too late, so the lyric itself has nothing to do with the awesome Canadian band. But the name might be a subtle nod to that direction. Our drummer Lassi is a huge fan.

A6:Does the second song deal with any special friends for the band?

Somehow Jo:It is about going through some hard times and we all go there at some point. It is basically a reminder that friends are there to back you up when you are completely lost. The song is easily the darkest shj song so far but it is meant to bring hope to those who have none.

A7:Why the band have this name?

Somehow Jo:It is part english and part finnish and it basically means somehow already. Somehow jo was a band without a name a few weeks before our first gig and we had to come up with something.

A8:How is Somehow Jo different from your previous bands?

Somehow Jo:We’ve had this lineup active since 2013, soall of our previous bands have been more or less starter bands. With this lineup we’ve found a good recipe to jam out and make new music and we keep growing as humans together. Over the years our chemistry has got better and better.

A9:How did the Spice Girls get into the band's theme?

Somehow Jo:I guess that was once said about our musical range more than anything.

A10:What´s the idea behind artwork´s album?

Somehow Jo:The main idea for the album cover came from the albums name itself, scales and details. You can also interprite the huge ass snail to represent nature and the tiny person portraying us humans.

A11:What kind of subject don´t deserve a Somehow Jo song?

Somehow Jo:I think any subject thats offensive or meant as a dagger doesn't deserve a song from us.

A12:It's not that I don't like it, but in which moments are keyboards essential for the band?

Somehow Jo:Keyboards just bring that little extra punch to the songs when we think the song needs it. It doesn't necessarily mean that every song has to have keyboards but if it compliments the music its good.

A13:This album is conceptual?

Somehow Jo:It’s not a full on concept album but there sure is themes that are repeating. There is some ruminating about the balance in life. Sometimes you have to feel bad in order to feel good.. Finding perspective and trying to be a better person for everybody around you by learning to deal with your own stuff first.

A14:Is the seventh song a joke or is it a play on words for the listener?

Somehow Jo:It is a song about getting enough of the internet people and their opinions. It is a getaway song from everybody when you just want to kick back and be alone for a moment.

A15:How band arrive to Inverse Records?

Somehow Jo:Our manager Ari talked to Jaakko from inverse and he came out to see us play live. We shook hands after the gig and everybody was happy.

A16:What kind of spirituality influenced this album?

Somehow Jo:It all boils down to love being the strongest force of all even though the album deals with a variety of emotions.

A17:The band feel differences between Tusk and now in Scales And Details?

Somehow Jo:Of course, we feel differences. We all have become better players and better songwriters over this time. The new album is more progressive and we've used more synths. Also the the lyrics are a bit deeper and more serious this time around.
