Well,Friends of Aristocracy!
We speak again of our newsroom, where in a little while, we will have, in all its emotions, the interview 168 of the Aristocracy. This time, we talked to a Swiss band that performs an electrifying and intense performance. The band demonstrates a storm of emotions and life experiences with a lot of modernity combined with the fidelity to their loud and stoner sound.
We will now talk to the band Naked Soldier. Let's go to one of their songs so that we can start this unprecedented interview with the Brazilian press. Not without first, thanking our Italian friends from The Metallist for introducing us to this wonderful band. Now let's get down to business.
A1:Can we talk about the composition work in “Naked Soldier”?
Naked Soldier:We are capitalizing on symbiotic songwriting through jamming for the most part. In the past, like on our Mirrorspeak demo, the songs were mostly composed and polished separately in our home studios. But now,the bulk of everything on our record is developed together with everyone completely responsible for their own contribution. And I think it worked out beautifully!
A2:What did you interpret as modern rock?
Naked Soldier:Basically, everything that has happened after Post Grunge. There are some really interesting bands out there, most aren’t even discovered by the broad public yet.Bands like Nothing but Thieves, Arcane Roots, Royal Blood and many more.
A3:Who is the Wicked Men?
Naked Soldier:Our singer Patrik. Haha!
A4:What band mean with first paradigm?
Naked Soldier:That kind of plays into the album composition methods we used in the band, with most songs developed in small parts and later put together in the home studio. Even though our story is short, it changed heavily in the last year. We also added a new second guitarist to the group and try to do things differently just to spice the rock landscape up a bit.
A5:Are these visions of life that the band wanted to address realistic, optimistic or pessimistic, and why?
Naked Soldier:A lot of stuff happened and is still happening in a very short amount of time in the world, think of the pandemic, war in Europe, widening rifts between political opinions, riots and protests about all different things.Things just don’t look up at this moment. We wanted to acknowledge all of that and shine our on light on that. We’re not pro-this, contra-that. We’re just pro-peace and pro-understanding and even if it’s hard to stay optimistic about the future, we try to convey this message through loud and aggressive music.
A6:How is Naked Soldier different from your previous bands?
Naked Soldier:We had a direct predecessor band called Mantra. We’re the same people, and still have a few songs from the old days. The one most obvious thing that has changed is that our music changed to a more stripped-down, groove-oriented sound. We don’t do much progressive things anymore,we concentrate mostly on raw rock goodness with Naked Soldier.
A7:What´s the idea behind the artwork?
Naked Soldier:Kind of a fun story! We originally ordered it as T-Shirt artwork, and our friend Armus Delusion just knocked it out of the park with this one. Crows are known as bringer of death by some cultures and bringer of luck in other cultures. We liked the duality of the imagery, and I think it represents our music beautifully.
A8:How did band arrive to Sixteentimes Music?
Naked Soldier:We have good friends who are also artists there, like Carson and Gentle Beast. We actually had two offers to become members of another labels, one label was actually really big and well-known.But we chose Sixteentimes Music because we think it’s the best place for us, they really do great things for the music scene here. And we benefitted immensely from their knowledge.
A9:What chaos should we embrace in your third song?
Naked Soldier:That song is actually from the Yellow Vest protests that happened in France some time ago. We don’t take sides in that protest, we’re not politicians. But for us it’s great imagery to be caught between the frontlines with a crowd of people fighting for their rights.
A10:Is this album conceptual?
Naked Soldier:No, not really at least not by lyrical thematic. We just chose some songs we thought would fit together well, even though no one sounds like the other.
A11:What makes the band's songs intricate?
Naked Soldier:That’s our progressive roots. You can hear it well in the last song, Love Tree. Just two minutes of noise and endless reverberation, with some small but cool melodies in between.
A12:What is the melancholy of the seventh song based on?
Naked Soldier:The whole song Melanchomaniac is about sadness, but picking yourself up when you fall. It’s bitter-sweet. That also plays into the theme of duality.
A13:What bands influenced you?
Naked Soldier:We all carry different influences into the band. But honestly, we’re really influenced by other local bands here, we have some outstanding bands here in the Zurich region. I for myself, think that Pyrolyzed, close friends of ours, is one of my biggest influences. They are just so damn cool.
A14:What identity did you want on this album?
Naked Soldier:Defining an identity is a bit hard for us. We act as a whole, but we respect each one as an independent individual. We also have no band leader or anyone who calls the shots on his own. It’s the mixture that is this album’s identity.
A15:Why the band have this name?
Naked Soldier:Because of our singer! In Switzerland, we have a conscript army. Our singer spent some time there, and one evening, he and one of his friends ended up in a strip club. At some point, he ended up pole dancing. That’s why he is the naked soldier. We named our band after him, basically.
A16:Explain the song two, please?
Naked Soldier:No Option is my favorite song on this record. It just evokes so much 90s desert rock coolness, and it reminds me a bit of Kyuss. No Option is one of the prime examples of songs that came to existence purely through jamming together. It is 100% us.
