The Aristocracy proudly arrives in their Fourteenth Interview with the Finnish Band Denigrate. The band makes a melancholy sound. At some point even evil. But,very interesting to listen to.Over the next five days, the band showed us their third album titled Blackguard. The band have this formation:Galzi Kallio On Vocals,Seppo Nummela On Guitar,Pekka Pyrhonen on Bass and Tipi Toivanen on Drums.Galzi e Seppo answer our questions.Let´s go to their song after watch this interview in all our emotions.
A1:Talking about the composition work in Blackguard?
Seppo Nummela:-I had few songs which were supposed to be released with another name than Denigrate. Those songs had some doom elements, so I thought that I could release them by myself as a solo project or something. But,Micko wanted to do the songs with Denigrate.
So we decided to make few songs more and release an EP before making our Third full album. We composed 7 songs and recorded them plus 2 cover songs. We decided to release only 6 songs for now because the total length was already more that 40 minutes. The main idea of the songs were to honor 90´s doom and bands as My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost,Type o´ Negative, the bands that we listen a lot while we were young and which had very big influence for the style of Denigrate. We did not want to follow modern trend but wanted the sounds to be modern. It was very easy to compose the songs.. I have always liked melancholic tunes and these songs are full of those. After we had recorded everything except the vocals, we separated our ways with Micko. It took some time to find a person who would fit into Mickos shoes. But ,we were more than lucky to find new singer Galzi who made fantastic job with the lyrics and vocal melodies.
A2:Why you have a song write in italian?
Galzi Kallio:I take ideas, names, stories from the most peculiar places.I never know where i find myself the next story but i tell you that stuff just keeps on coming! I wish there would've been song titles in Hindi and Mongolian for this one but the refused to come, so italian it was.
A3:What kind of misery inspire the band?
Galzi Kallio:It's the opposite way around, the happier and more focused we are, the gloomier shit we're able to produce! You see it's the absolute opposites that keeps us going on my opinion. Personally i'm not into dwelling a melancholic moods on my daily life but that's exactly why dark and twisted shit still maintains interesting to me. I believe i speak on behalf of the other guys too.
A4:How band put progressive in your style?
Seppo Nummela:Everything comes very natural.Tipi and Pekka are very talented of playing progressive stuff. So,I blame them.
A5:Still there a blas of gothic in band sound?
Seppo Nummela:I have never tried to get that sound, but I think this album has it more than previous album.
A6:What´s the idea behind artwork´s album?
Galzi Kallio:BLACKGUARD.It´s blackguard in the cover. The word meaning the abusive behaviour and that guy on the cover's keeping folks down in a different dark ways as in the songs.
A7:Is the men an experience going wrong?
Galzi Kallio:You mean are we getting fucked up as a mankind?Well,if enough was enough and too much could be share for small-scale rock bands for example,we'd be on a better course. But, nihilism probably leads nowhere either.
A8:Some literature or film inspire the band?
Galzi Kallio: Blackguard stories consist of twenty-something source works.Stories are being gathered on various depictions of evil and evil deeds of man. It's a small collaboration of bad going worse and still struggling to fing the passage.
A9:How the band arrive to Inverse Records?
Seppo Nummela:We wanted to release the album which was ready and we knew that Inverse had connections that we need and can do the job very well.
A10:Why the band have this name?
Seppo Nummela:I took it from Carcass album Heartwork 1995 because it sounded cool.
A11:How is Denigrate different from your previous bands?
Seppo Nummela:Actually Denigrate is my first band and was formed 1995. Of course, I have now Dead Shape Figure, Ambassadors of Eternity and other projects. But,Denigrate’s music just has a different vibe than those other bands. Songs differs a lot from each other bands.
A12:This album is conceptual?yes or no and why?
Seppo Nummela:No, there are different stories behind the songs.
A13:Literally Speaking.Is the world ridiculous?
Galzi Kallio:The world might have had the same amount of redicilousness always, but we haven't been able to take all the shit at our faces at once constantly at earlier times.
A14:Based on the songs in Blackguard and your opinion,is it better to think the human being as agony than animal for health?
Galzi Kallio:Not sure what you're aiming here but i cannot but to come to a conclusion where us, men, are nothing but a part of organism called life and a huble part of animal kindom. The superiority is going to be our downfall but still on our last days we're educated enough to hear our Dog God and smart enough to desert all our Dogfaced Gods.
A15:What band mean with Rara Avis?
Galzi Kallio:Well, that's another bit none so self explanatory title there, but to be short,it's "rare bird" in latin, to expand it a bit the song's about an exceptional persons whom experiences nothing but false accuses, haunt and torment only to see and understand what others do not.
A16:What evil befalls inspire the band?
Galzi Kallio:Well,i strongly believe the only evil shit in this band are the stories.I mean i'm relatively new in this band but i haven't seen any evil or satanic activity going on at the rehearsals or anything so it's all cool, heh!The might sacrifice me on the first tour but should be worth it!
A17:The band feel differences between Hollowpoint and now in Blackguard?
Seppo Nummela:Hollowpoint had more up tempo songs than Blackguard. Blackguard is much more darker and slower.
Galzi Kallio:This is my first album as a vocalist with the guys and i tried to stay as little aware of the previous as possible to bring out something new.It was really interesting approach and i'm glad the guys did give me that freedom.
