A1:Let's talk about the composition work in "Reach For The Scars"?
Dan Lorenzo: Meaning the song writing process? Well, I wrote all the music on this album, but I only wrote the lyrics to two of the songs. How I do it is, I go to JROD Productions recording studio in new York. I record the whole song to a click track. I basically finish my guitar parts. Then Johnny recorded his drums in Texas. Then we send a rough mix of the bass and the drums to the vocalist we want to sing and the bassist.
A2:Not that I don't like Black Sabbath, because I really like it. But, can we say that this partnership is only just a well-deserved tribute to this metal titan?
Dan Lorenzo:I wouldn't say that. Sabbath were the first doomy tune down band that got popular. I love them, but I wouldn't put them in my top 5.
A3:Your best-known bands were part of my beginnings in the press. How did the idea of getting together?
Dan Lorenzo:I did an album in 2007 with Bobby Blitz called The Cursed Room Full of Sinners. Blitz didn't like Hades, but he loves Non-Fiction and he loved my solo albums. After 2007 I took about a decade off from songwriting. When I "discovered" Nathan Opposition we recorded 4 albums in 3 years as Vessel Of Light and I still had more music in me. So I asked Jason McMaster to sing and Cassius King released an album. Then I kept writing and writing and I had more than enough for the 2nd Cassius King album. Drummer Ron Lipnicki didn't have the time to record everything I wrote so I asked Johnny Kelly. Once Johnny recorded the drums to what would become Sing For The Devil? I was so excited I wrote even more! A4:Are there more differences or similarities in Hades, PATRIARCHS IN BLACK and Type O Negative?
Dan Lorenzo:Very different. Patriarchs In Black are much more similar to Non-FictionPrior to this album, you never worked together. Is this really correct? If so, was there a friendship or musical respect prior to the work before this work? Johnny and I had never played together before this. Non-Fiction opened up for Type O a bunch before Johnny was even in the band. I remember we only officially met at an All-Star jam benefit a few years back. We stayed in touch via email. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fF0KVcp31Y
A5:Why is the second song a question?
Dan Lorenzo:I was driving in my car when I thought of the melody and the lyrics. I didn't know what they meant at that time. I did NOT want to praise the devil so I wrote the song about the folklore of a musician meeting the devil at the crossroads. The devil offeres to buy his soul for fame and fortune but my guy says NO!. So instead of singing for the devil infront of thousands of people he just sings for himself infront of small crowds. A6:Of course, I don't want to anticipate decisions, because I'm a terrible clairvoyant. But, do you believe it or do you want this partnership to continue?
Dan Lorenzo:Yes! I had so much fun with this and I'm so proud of it. I already have more music and Karl is going to sing another song next week. If Johnny will play drums I'd love to do this again. A7:Even though I don't like the term, I'll have to ask this, because it's a question from an employee of my work. Do you believe that your music and sound belongs to True Heavy Metal?
Dan Lorenzo:Maybe Hades does. It's all just opinion though. Your co-worker might say no, but a different co-worker would say yes. A8:What´s the idea behind the artwork?
Dan Lorenzo:Ruben Barahona a famous NYC tattoo artist did that for me. It's a "God-like" hand reaching down to the "scars" of earth. A9:What kind of subject doesn´t deserve songs from Hades, PATRIARCHS IN BLACK and Type O Negative?
Dan Lorenzo:Somebody who likes Nickelback! {Ha !}
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6koLGOIs5U A10:Does the duo like Stoner and Sludge?
Dan Lorenzo:Some of it sure. But I don't smoke weed and I have a short attention span, so I don't like overly long songs. A11:How did the band arrive to MDD Records?
Dan Lorenzo:I was going through Rock Hard magazine and I reached out to 5-6 different labels. They all said, "Yes". They all wanted us, but MDD seemed the best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eT9Wix--M80 A12:What would current Johnny Kelly and San Lorenzo say to Johnny Kelly and Dan Lorenzo at the beginning of their careers?
Dan Lorenzo:Great question! Hmmm. Well, I have no regrets, but maybe "Don't worry so much. Most of the things you worry about won't happen" A13:Complete the sentence: Although I really like Black Sabbath, my biggest musical influence is?
Dan Lorenzo:Kiss! When I first heard Kiss Rock and Roll Over, I thought it was a greatest hits record. Kiss' songs are generally 3 minutes long.So my songs sort of sound like Black Sabbath songs with Kiss song lengths.
